Short
history of S.C. MEVA S.A.
In
1882, in Turnu Severin, the locomotive and wagon repair workshop
was set up, considering that the town provided well trained
workforce and having in view the particular geographical location,
as it was the last town bordering the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
The union of the Romanian railways with the Austro - Hungary's
ones on the Vârciorova - Orsova line required the necessary
inspection of locomotives and railcars at the terminus point,
Turnu Severin, and created the optimum environment for the
development of the activity of the workshop, which operated
as a distinct entity within the railways structure until 1960,
when it merged with the local Shipyard, setting up the Mechanical
Works. It was under this form of organization that it became
subordinate to the Ministry of Machine Manufacturing. In 1968,
the Mechanical Works experienced a reorganization process,
the Shipyards to continue separately and the Workshop to carry
on its activity under the name of the Railcar Plant. Starting
this year, and under the influence of economic changes and
reorganizations, the facility has been operating independently
experiencing excellent development. In 1991, under the Laws
15/1990 and 31/1990 and Government Resolution 1264/1990, a
Company was set up under the name of S.C. MEVA S.A. Drobeta
Turnu Severin. S.C. MEVA S.A., a traditional name in the railcar
manufacturing industry for more than 100 years, is one of
the largest wagon manufacturers in Romania. It became a joint-stock
company in 1991.

The
company has manufactured about 100 types of freight cars, such as:
general use freight cars, tank cars for heavy and light oil products,
mineral oil and liquefied gas, special railcars with pneumatic discharge
for powdery products,, freight cars for coal, cereal, cement and
platform cars. S.C. MEVA S.A. has made a wide range of freight cars
of various capacities, static steel vessels of various shapes and
volumes, metallic installations and spare parts for freight cars.
In recent years, S.C. MEVA S.A. has manufactured new wagons, containers
and big capacity vessels for cement transportation on barges, and
modernized wagons for companies such as: SNTFM CFR MARFA, VTG, KVG,
ERMEWA, CORRIDOR, etc. The company operates up-to-date installations
and equipment for cutting, welding, preparation and protection of
surfaces. It is worth mentioning some of the countries in which
our company has exported wagons during the years: Germany, Austria,
Greece, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, Hungary, Iran, Iraq,
China, Indonesia, Cuba, the former USSR, etc. Railcars are manufactured
in compliance with designs and technical requirements elaborated
by our own specialists or according to the designs or requests of
our customers. The wide range of products meets the ISCIR provisions
for vessels under pressure, as well as the international norms UIC,
RID and RIV, to which we are affiliated. The top quality of our
products is confirmed by certifications awarded by well-known organizations
in the field of quality, such as: TÜV, BUREAU VERITAS, ÖBB, EBA,
GERMANISCHER LLOYD.
